Danish Crafts is based on the idea of making Danish craft available. The centre was established as an official institution under the Danish Ministry of Culture in July of 1999.
Danish Crafts was established following a pilot project named crafts.dk, aimed at creating visibility for Danish craft. The project was initiated in August of 1997 and ran for just under 2 years with the support of the then-existing Danish design foundation Designfonden.
When the official institution was established in July of 1999 Danish Crafts obtained its official window on the world and a professional centre to match those of other artistic fields. The name was changed from crafts.dk to Danish Crafts - Information Centre of Danish Crafts and Design.
The institution was established with a professional board who did their bit to create an exceedingly efficient commercial framework for the institution to operate under.
In November of 2004 the Danish government and the parliamentary parties ratified a financial bill to strengthen Danish design during the 2005-2008 period. See Ministerial Funding for Design for a further description.
