Stuff – Ingenuity and Critique

In 2004 Danish Crafts arranged the exhibition Stuff - Ingenuity and Critique. The exhibition was the craft contribution to the large Danish cultural festival “SUPERDANISH: Newfangled Danish Culture”, which was held in the autumn of 2004 at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto.

The exhibition presented 31 of Denmark's most innovative craft artists selected by curators Louise Campbell and Melanie Egan. Danish Crafts was in charge of the concept development, planning and execution  - including marketing and press - of the exhibition in co-operation with the curators.

The participants were characterized by an investigative and questioning approach. While emphasizing quality and discipline the craft artists selected challenge Danish design tradition, thereby bringing crafts into the 21st century.

Besides demonstrating the unique qualities of craft, the exhibition also paved the way for a discussion of the significance and value of crafts today. The critical attitude inherent in craft makes it a highly personal issue; it gives a clear impression of the artist behind the work, giving it presence and relevance. Thus crafts today are groundbreaking not just in design, but in the field of visual arts too.

A conference was held in connection with the exhibition entitled "Curating and critical writing about craft" as well as workshops featuring several of the participating craft artists.

Danish Crafts was responsible for the concept development as well as organizing and implementing the exhibition in co-operation with the curators, Louise Campbell and Melanie Egan. Furthermore, Danish Crafts was in charge of press and marketing in connection with the exhibition in co-operation with the Harbour Front Centre.
